2A - Bug List

1. Large vehicles disrupt normal traffic, especially during rush hour and you are in a rush to get somewhere
WHY bug exists: Buses and big trucks in the same lane as smaller faster cars. These larger vehicles tend to block or significantly lower the flow of normal traffic. Should have a separate lane.

2. We have to use dirty bathroom door handles after cleaning our hands
WHY bug exists: The sink is placed on the inside of the bathroom, not the outside. So when you go to leave the bathroom you have to touch the door handle to get out. Some people don’t wash hands, or wash very poorly, creating a dirty bathroom door handle.

3. House bathroom water faucet handles are not automatic, meaning we have to touch to turn on our water (which is also very dirty)
WHY bug exists: Expensive to place in house. Takes more maintenance.

4. Umbrellas are not big enough and we continue getting wet in the rain
WHY bug exists: Smaller size is easier to carry around. Doesn’t take up too much space.

5. Toilet flush is aimed to be used by hands, very dirty
WHY bug exists: The toilet is very dirty, one of the dirtiest parts of the house. Yet, after we finish we have to put our hands on the toilet handle. The handle is in a convenient place to be engineered.

6. Roommates watch TV too loud while I’m trying to sleep
WHY bug exists: They have more time to rest at night, because of busy daytime schedules. Hence, they watch TV at that time of the day.

7. Sharpies bleed through papers, creating a useless backside of the sheet
WHY bug exists: They are very thick and serve the purpose of writing on thicker materials than thin paper such as cardboard. If they were lighter in color they wouldn’t be seen on these thicker materials.

8. I accidentally deleted messages on my phone and couldn’t get it back, either through my phone company or a third party
WHY bug exists: You agree to delete a conversation, passing through a two-step purpose. This gives the notion that you are fully aware of your action, and that you would not have to undo this action.

9. We can’t answer a phone call on a computer
WHY bug exists: There’s audio and microphone, but we need service to call and receive. We have a phone for this purpose, and a computer serves another purpose, of bigger projects.

10. Nail polish is hard to put on, especially when putting on with non-dominant hand
WHY bug exists: We have to use a brush to transfer the paint onto our nails. This brush molds somewhat into the shape of our nails, but not perfectly. To transfer the paint onto our dominant hand, we have to use our non-dominant hand, for lack of having a more useful means of putting it on our dominant hand.

11. Wires everywhere
WHY bug exists: Our technology demands that we have a wire to attach the hardware to the electricity source.

12. Tags on clothing; I always have to have scissors on hand
WHY bug exists: Tags on clothing hold a lot of information on how to wash, what type of material was used in the article of clothing, size, and other important information the company feels they have to state on the tag. Much of this information is also important for the consumer.

13. Bluetooth fails many times on wireless headphones
WHY bug exists: Sometimes the connection is poor between Bluetooth and the device. Correcting the connection is simply time-consuming or could have an underlying issue.

14. Pasta water boils over and out of pot, creating a mess on the stove-top
WHY bug exists: Pasta expands in water as cooked and the pot most likely is too small. Overheating the pasta also creates more air in the water causing leak, so putting a lid on it to cook it faster creates this problem.

15. Wooden spoons used for cooking take very long to dry
WHY bug exists: Wood absorbs a lot of water and will have more surface area wet, hence making it longer to dry than metal or plastic spoons.

16. Preheating oven takes very long, meaning you have to wait after prepping your food for oven to be at the right temperature
WHY bug exists: An oven is a large appliance, with a limited amount of heating surface, meaning the internal temperature will take long to heat up.

17. Straightening/curling hair burns a lot of the hair
WHY bug exists: As of right now, we need heat to be able to transform our hair from its natural form. Heat plus the frame allows our hair to mold into the shape we want. There is no device that works as well as heat to mold our hair yet.

18. Having to have computer/phone charger on you to charge these devices
WHY bug exists: To transfer electricity onto these personal devices, we need something that connects the source of energy to device.

19. Carrying a passport for international flights instead of an ID to carry in wallet; could have both as a safety measure, because if you forget to pack your passport you could miss your flight
WHY bug exists: Our passport certifies our identity and nationality so we can travel legally to other countries.

20. Clearing vacuum dust elevates a lot of dust back into the clean floor
WHY bug exists: The vacuum works very effectively (more than a broom) into sweeping up dirt from the ground. It stores the dirt into a part of the vacuum, which will be cleared out after a certain amount of time. Until this certain amount of time, the vacuum keeps a very clean atmosphere. When opened and tossed into a trash, some of the small particles will be elevated back into the air and floor.

Reflection: This assignment was hard for me at two different points: in the beginning after the first two, and around the middle-end. The first point in time happened because I ran out of things that bug me out of memory. The second point in time happened because after I was flowing and paying attention to my surroundings more, there came a point where I couldn’t find anything else that bugged me. This roadblock lasted for two days, and then with a clear mind I went back to it, and was able to find more little bugs from different environments I was put in. It was a very interesting and appropriate assignment for this class to start us diving into entrepreneurship because it made us take a step back and analyse our environment in a way the ordinary person does not (like I used to not before trying this out). After taking this time to analyse our surroundings, we are able to think about solutions to these bugs, leading to an entrepreneurial practice.

  1. Hey Giovanna! When reading through your list of bugs, I found that I agreed with a large portion of them. Especially #15 about wooden spoons, or #2 about having to use dirty bathroom handles. I even wrote on my own bug list about umbrellas not being big enough as well. I appreciated how thorough your reasons were for why your bugs exist and had never thought to consider things like the large amount of wires everywhere since technology has become so prominent.

  2. Hello Giovanna. I really enjoy reading these bug lists because we get to see the world from some other person's perspective and we can also see that people have similar "bugs" as we do. Two of your "bugs" really stuck out to me because they are so frequent in my day-to-day life. Loud roommates late at night as well as the absurd amount of wires in my house are two things that definitely bug me. I feel that writing these "bugs" down will absolutely help me overcome these things that bother me.

  3. Hey Giovanna! I thought you did a great job highlighting a lot of small problems many people run into everyday. A lot of your cooking bugs were things that happen to me all the time, but I just never think about how much of a problem they really are. I also really enjoyed the layout of your blog, I thought you did a good job of designing it and the nature background at the top is a nice touch.
