9A – Testing the Hypothesis, Part 2

Who: Through my interviews I found a group of people that could fall outside the scope of my market. First it is people who don’t have thorough knowledge of sustainable architecture, and the second is people who don’t have the budget for it. Interviewer #2 from Fort. Lauderdale stated that he would only invest in something he knows would have a big impact, and he believes that sustainable architecture has very little impact. They fall outside the scope. In my interview #3 AND #4 stated that they would absolutely invest in sustainable architecture, but budget limits them. They would fall into the opportunity, but they have a limiting factor.

What: My need differs from other needs in the sense that it is still architecture and people have the need to build buildings, and so why not make it sustainable. Interviewer #5 said that if she easily found a sustainable architect that she liked and was not pricey she would go for it. So what I am gathering is that this opportunity is more of a small appetite not a complete hunger.

Why: I recognize from interview #1 that some people will simply not change their opinion about climate change, and will not invest in the product. They differ completely from those inside the boundary because those inside want, and know, climate change is real and there could be individual efforts that mitigate climate change danger. This person outside the boundary has a different mindset, and that responds to all similar to him, as the opportunity does not extend to them at all unless a knowledge or perceptual change occurs in them.

Inside the boundary
Who is In:
  • Companies who worry about their carbon footprint.
  • Individual consumers who worry for environmental damage
  • Companies/People newly constructing a building/house
What the Need Is:
  • Buy sustainable products to have a positive impact on the environment.
  • Shift a heavy amount of responsibility to large corporations and the government.
Why the Need Exists:
  • To reduce climate change damage

Outside the boundary
Who is Not:
  • People who have already recently engaged in sustainable architecture.
  • People whose budget falls outside the range of affording sustainable architecture.
  • People who don’t have extensive knowledge about climate change dangers and things we can do to avoid it.

What the Need Is Not:
  • To completely eliminate our (companies and individuals) carbon footprint.

Alternative Explanations
  • Don’t believe/ignorance of the topic

  1. Hello Giovanna,
I believe your choice of topic to be interesting and important. I don't know a lot about sustainable architecture but have learned a lot since reading your post. Climate change is pertinent and those who do not know a lot about it will not be able to understand the importance of sustainable architecture. Budget is something that would prevent a large amount of people from participating in such a thing. Low income families would have no way to obtain sustainable products. I think you should continue on with this idea.
    Thanks so sharing!
