3A - My Entrepreneurship Story

As a child I would always help around in the kitchen. Help my mom make an elaborate chicken dish, or just rice, and “help” my dad barbeque (mostly watch because he was scared I would burn myself….). Eventually came the day when I made my first dish, a brownie, and I was elated. It wasn’t a package brownie, and it came out delicious. Surprised my whole family for sure. After that I started meddling more in the kitchen, making my breakfasts, then my dinners, then cooking dinner for the family. This was all around age 12. I would watch MasterChef and Cupcake Wars on loop, wanting to someday make it there, be on TV cooking my own recipes to be judged by renowned chefs. So, when I entered high school I had such a passion and desire to open my own restaurant. I would look at some flaws at restaurants I would go into and know I could do it differently. Prices were too high when competition is lower, bathroom is far and hidden, staff isn’t properly trained, etc. I would also draw inspirations from restaurants, not only drawbacks. I would notice an exceptionally well trained staff, stunning decoration, delicious food, good prices, amazing ambience, etc. This was all a dream for me.

My dad, shortly after I entered high school, opened his own business, a telecommunications company. Immediately it inspired me, if he could start a business at his age, I could start mine. As time went by, I saw the struggle of having a business, he worked from 8am-9pm. I would only see him on weekends. He had a pretty big team from the beginning, him plus 6 more on payroll. He had a lot of money invested in, so he was running off that money, in hopes and expectations that in 6 months income would come in. His journey has been rocky. He had incredible sales and profits, but then would be dry for half a year to a year. He aged. But he is living his dream. He loves having a team completely dedicated to him and his vision, and though there are rough patches, he knows he can make the company stand on its feet again. He is deeply passionate, and it is working out for him. To tie it all up, I have seen the hardships of entrepreneurship, I know it is highly demanding and I know it will exhaust me, but still I want to carry out that dream I have always had. I want to impress mini me.

My dad and our holiday feast.

I enrolled in ENT3003 because it is necessary for my minor. I hope to take a step back from my more technical classes, and be able to focus on my passions and creativity a bit more in college.

  1. Hi Giovanna,

It was great to read about how you would help your parents with dinner as a kid. This was something I could personally relate to, as I also would try to help my mom and dad cook when I was younger. It was very inspiring to hear about how your dad started his own telecommunications company. My job after graduation is with a technology, media, and telecommunications coverage group, so I was interested in hearing about your dad starting his own business in that industry. Overall, I thought your post was great and followed the assignment requirements very well.

  2. Hey Giovanna,

I really enjoyed reading your post. It shows the ups and downs of becoming an entrepreneur from a real life experience. I love how your dad's passion towards his business motivated you to open up your own one day. I honestly would love to open up a restaurant in the future. After hearing about Bluebird Wings and your dad's business, as well as countless other business startup stories, it is quite evident that ownership of a business takes a lot of work, dedication, and passion and is not a walk in the park.
